Teen Choice Awards: All the Exclusive Details on Co-Host Gina Rodriguez’s Dazzling Looks of the Night – Straight from Her Glam Squad!

You already loved her from Jane the Virgin, but after co-hosting Sunday night’s Teen Choice Awards, Gina Rodriguez is officially top of your “style crush” list, thanks to her adorable outfit changes, as well as her classic beauty looks and huge smile (are you surprised Crest recently tapped the star for the launch of its 3D White Brilliance toothpaste?). So to get you your full fill of Rodriguez, we reached out to the actress’s five-member glam squad for the exclusive scoop on (and fun behind-the-scenes shots of) her pre-show prep.

For the star-studded evening, Rodriguez called in help from (deep breath) stylist Lauren Rodriguez (no relation!), makeup artist Carissa Ferreri, hair stylist Paul Norton, manicurist Karen Gutierrez and tan guru Tony Mayorga — to get red-carpet ready. But like all major events, the star’s first look — the embellished gray Alberta Ferretti design with a pair of light pink Christian Louboutin pumps — was decided on several weeks in advance, according to her stylist.

“We wanted to do something really fun, a little edgy,” stylist Rodriguez tells PEOPLE. “It’s the Teen Choice Awards, [so] we wanted it young and fresh, not super sexy.”

The stylist, who’s been working with the actress for three years, began the dress selection process with 55 high-fashion options. Narrowing the dozens of looks down to the three dresses she wore that night (she changed into a blush-toned Elizabeth and James dress and a sequined Badgley Mischka number) wasn’t an endless debate, says the stylist, as the actress ultimately leaves the final decision up to her — which can be a bit nerve-wracking.

“[The final pick] is literally whatever she feels amazing in,” Rodriguez tells PEOPLE. “It’s never, ‘Bring this!’ It’s always, ‘Lauren, I trust you, you know my heart.’ And I’m like, ‘Wait, wait!,’ and she’s like, ‘I trust you.’” (How she knew the Alberta Ferretti dress was a winner? Rodriguez’s reaction was, “‘Oh my God, this dress is so cool!’”)

Knowing that co-host would be changing frequently, hairstylist Norton kept her locks simple, alternating between three center-parted looks (a casual style with a middle part, a style smoothly pushed behind the ears and a loose, brushed-out wave). And believe it or not, Norton didn’t consult with the star before diving in.

“Honestly, Gina is so amazing, we didn’t even discuss it,” he tells PEOPLE. “She didn’t have a care in the world, she trusts us so much. She was like, ‘Do your thing.’ She knows we can look at the garment, look at the situation and run with it. Given that she lets us do that, we always win. It really is amazing.”

To nail her soft, bouncy waves, Norton blew out Rodriguez’s hair using the night’s hero product (Joico JoiWhip Firm Hold Design Foam) to hold her curls but to also give them a bit of bounce. He then curled her strands with a 1.25-in. iron by GHD and finished the the look with a few spritzes of shimmer spray (Joico Gold Dust Shimmer Finishing Spray) for a bit of pizazz. “It gives a little sparkle, not an obnoxious glitter,” he says.

As for the star’s makeup, Ferreri began prepping Rodriguez’s skin with a couple of masks (Sisley Black Rose Cream Mask and Sisley Eye Contour Mask) to hydrate her skin hours before the show started.

“We don’t do [masks] very often, we’re usually pressed for time. And Paul and I work simultaneously so he may be drying her hair,” she says. “But because we had so much time [Sunday], it was a nice little treat. She has the most amazing skin, I am so lucky.”

Once the masks were off, it was go time! The makeup pro opted for a champagne-hued eye shadow (Josie Maran Coconut Watercolor in Playa Del Pink) on the lids and Sisley Phyto 4 Ombres in 1 Dream on the outside to elongate her eyes. “I don’t want to say smoky, but I wanted to make her eyes pop using certain colors in certain areas,” she says.

After the eyes and brows, Ferreri finished with the star’s lips, which changed with every outfit switch-up. For the first look, the makeup relied on a subtle shimmery lip balm (Burt’s Bees Lip Balm Shimmer in Strawberry , plus a crayon (Burt’s Bees Lip Crayon in Carolina Coast) and a nude gloss (Burt’s Bees Lip Gloss in Nearly Dusk). And as the night when on, the lips became deeper and a whole lot sparklier.

“We want to everything to be balanced, not take away [attention],” Ferreri tells PEOPLE. “The dress had a lot of detail, beautiful beading. So I wanted the lip to complement that. I wanted a lavender color to pick up the silver tones. I kept everything neutral. I wanted makeup that could work across the board.”

Once the actress saw the final look, she couldn’t help but celebrate with her team, Ferreri says. “She’s so funny. She just glows. When she’s all done up she’s high-fiving us, telling us, ‘Live! Create! Live!,’” she says. “If it was something she wasn’t feeling, she would tell us. But she knows if I didn’t like it, I would take it off.”

And with one swipe of “Tutulle” polish by Christian Louboutin (yes, she had it on her fingers and feet!), painted by Gutierrez, she was good to go!
