You can now get a degree in fashion law thanks in part to Diane von Furstenberg.

Fordham University in New York City, which is home to Fashion Law Institute, announced the new fashion law degree offering inside the Lincoln Center campus.

“There are plenty of big law firms in the city that hire lawyers who have knowledge in the background of fashion,” Professor Susan Scafidi said. “Why wouldn’t they hire lawyers who are actually trained in the field of fashion?”

Scafidi, who also created the first fashion law class in 2010, thanked the CFDA and the “patron saint” of fashion law Von Furstenberg for making the degree possible. The designer is also part-financier and backer of the program.

At the press conference von Furstenberg said the she “firmly believes this program will become a powerful tool in the fashion world and beyond, and help us all as an industry-lawyers or not-better understand, grow, and protect our businesses.”

Applications for the program, which starts Fall 2015, are already being accepted, and will be offered for full-time and part-time students. There are two different options for those interested: a Master of Studies in Law, for professionals interested in fashion law, and a Master’s of Law, or LL.M, in Fashion Law for students who already have a J.D. law degree.

Courses include fashion financing, fashion licensing and fashion modelling law.
