With the anticipation of Fashion Week approaching, there are some serious issues at hand that don’t include trends, street-style or celebrity appearances. In a Health Initiative letter from fashion duo Diane von Fursteberg (board chairnman) and Steven Kolb (president and CEO), the CFDA wants to notify everyone of model awareness and diversity.

According to Women’s Wear Daily, the two are reminding designers, stylists and agents of the importance of enlisting healthy models, who are at least 16 years old. All included parties received a mass email addressing the issue, that also ended with: “And, of course, let’s remember that American fashion champions diversity. At the inaugural New York Fashion Week: Men’s in July, we were very excited to see so much diversity on the runway….Let’s collectively do the right thing and set an example.”

And while we’re pleased DvF and Kolb found a way to address the elephant in the room, we can’t help but to think that the when it comes to diversity, the numbers don’t seem to match up. Just last season in a report issued by The Fashion Spot, 75.6 percent of New York Fashion Week models were white – which basically means we have some major catching up to do.

Hopefully this is one of many steps to come.
