True Life: Selfies Are More Deadly Than Shark Attacks

Our obsession with selfies has reached a critical peak.

In a report by Mashable, it is now known that the pursuit of the perfect selfie has killed more people than shark attacks this year. In the last 12 months, 12 people have died while taking a selfie, compared to only 8 deaths associated with shark attacks. That is one per month.

The number might seem small, but we are talking about selfies, and the fact that people are going to such lengths to get likes on social media is a bit troubling. So how are people dying in their selfie attempts?

Four of the deaths were caused by falling, like Hideto Ueda, a 66-year-old Japanese tourist who died after falling down stairs at the Taj Mahal in the midst of a selfie. Getting hit or injured by trains is the next leading cause of selfie deaths.

The selfie obsession has crossed a dangerous line with many parks closing because tourists are attempting to take selfies with bears (yes, that happened), and we see crazy selfie attempts everywhere from bull runs to mountain ledges. The selfie stick has already been notoriously banned from several landmarks, but it seems warning signs will soon need to go up to advertise the dangers of a taking a basic selfie.

So next time you are planning a crazy ‘but first let me take a selfie” moment on a ledge or up high, rethink it or those might be your last words.
