UK-Based Nigerian Label Afromania By Nkwo Debuts 2014 Collection
There’s something overwhelmingly tribal about the 2014 “Love Festival” collection by UK-based Nigerian label Afromania by Nkwo. Maybe it’s the feathers, hemp-like bralettes, fringe details and animal print– or maybe it’s the fun take on African design that makes us want to jump in a jeep and take a safari.
Whatever it is, the new collection of 14 pieces was influenced by 60′s Afrocentric dress. Modeling the hand-dyed pieces sourced from the motherland is Ty Evans Akingbola, whose modern look takes us into the present.
What’s interesting is that this collection was actually created in 2011, but the recession got the best of its initial debut. “Despite the beautiful fabrics, feathers and fringing, it never really went into production save for a few samples,” said designer, Nkwo Onwuka on the labels Facebook page. “But who knows…it just might be back in some form or another.”
Currently, the collection is sold at London boutiques and online retailers.
