VMAs 2015: Miley Cyrus Totally Out-Mileyed Herself When It Came to Her Hair Accessories

By now, you’ve probably heard all about Miley Cyrus’ scandalous, half-naked looks from the MTV Video Music Awards (and if you haven’t, you really need to get on that!), but her off-the-wall hair accessories still remain somewhat of a mystery. Where does one find a pig-nose bow? And how did she host a mini rave inside her rainbow ponytail? We’ve got the scoop straight from her mane man, pro hairstylist Gregory Russell for TIGI.

To make the singer’s looks come to life, Russell began by slicking back Cyrus’ hair with TIGI Bed Head Hard Head Gel — using a comb to pull her hair as tight and flat as possible toward the crown. This created a smooth “base look” which he used to build her various crazy ponytails off of.

Then to create the dreaded texture, he sectioned off 2-to-3-inch pieces, adding a pearl-sized amount of texturizing paste from the base to the ends. He split each section in half, twisting it twice around itself, and teased them with a comb. The whole process took about an hour and a half to complete, he says.

As for her crazy hair accessories? “We picked [them] according to the wardrobe looks pulled,” Russell tells PEOPLE. “I brought a lot of options to try with each look, and [the accessory picked] depended on the length of our changes and outfits.”

A few of the big winners: Her aforementioned pig bow (which was created by jewelry designer Patricia Morales), metallic streamers, a neon flower crown and a party in a ponytail (all pictured above). “I used battery-packed wire lights to create a modern spacey vibe,” Russell says of the latter light-up look. Each was anchored in place with numerous hair pins — which we’re assuming was to prevent them from flying off if she got a little too sassy with her hair flips.
