Which Member of Fifth Harmony Was Afraid to Approach One Direction Because of Her Acne?

The only logical next step for a pop group that has their own Barbie Dolls and star in a coveted Candie’s campaign, is to land a buzzy beauty contract. Which Fifth Harmony has done, of course. We caught up with the busy beauties to talk all things skincare (and pose for a few selfies, naturally!).

Although the new faces of Clean & Clear always look glam in front of the camera, for Camila Cabello she tells PEOPLE that wasn’t always the case. “I think that we have all had our fair share of experiences with acne but for me, I actually never had acne until the first time we went on tour and it hit me like a ton of bricks,” Cabello explains. “It was just all over my face and I just remember waking up and looking in the mirror and literally being afraid to look in the mirror because I would just cry. I didn’t want to go on stage.”

And if you thought it was tough leaving the house with an acne flare-up, what about when you meet other famous faces? “The first time I went to the Teen Choice Awards, I remember meeting One Direction and I was afraid to get to close to them. I was so over-thinking it because I thought they would look at my acne and I didn’t realize how much acne can take a toll on a kid’s self esteem. It got to the point where I couldn’t have a conversation with someone.”

Now she’s embracing the struggle by sharing her story in the new video series, “Feel the Real” in which all the girls open up about their skin-securities. For example, Dinah Jane opens up about not feeling confident with her looks growing up. In Ally Brooke’s video, she talks all about her nighttime skincare routine, Lauren Jauregui focuses on the morning (where the hashtag #thestruggleisreal comes into mind) and Normani Hamilton shares her daytime touch-up secrets.

We also got them to dish on their other fave beauty products. For Ally it’s L’Oréal mascara, which makes her lashes “so full and thick without it being clumpy.” Lauren likes to go bare-faced as much as possible, save for Kiehl’s lip balms. (Pear is her favorite flavor.). Normani is a Maybelline BB Cream kind of gal, Camilla swears by Dior Lip Glow, while Dinah goes more dramatic with M.A.C.’s Half-Red color.

And because they are style stars now (they presented the Candie’s Choice Style Icon Award to Britney Spears at the 2015 Teen Choice Awards) we had to find out all about their on-tour style. Not surprisingly, Normani is the heaviest packer of the group (the others did vote her closet “most-raidable“, afterall!). “Normani has like three closets that she brings along,” says Lauren. But it’s all thanks to good-ole mom, “I honestly blame my mom because she still packs my suitcase,” explains Normani.

Ally’s trick for being on-the-road is all about bringing the comforts of home with her. “I like bringing special things from home, like a special outfit or a blanket,” she shares. “I have a blanket that Mani [Normani] gave me, and my stuffed moose. His name is Moose Moose and he goes everywhere with me.”
