Why A Caitlyn Jenner Halloween Costume Is Not A Good Idea

Planning a creative and unique Halloween costume begins months in advance.

The most talked about celebrities and public figures are usually the top picks for costumes, and so it is no surprise that Caitlyn Jenner Vanity Fair costumes are popping up in stores across the country, and it is only August. However, take our advice, and don’t even open that can of worms.

While we understand that for many a costume is a way to pay homage to a favorite celebrity, Jenner’s transition has not been without its critics, and the costume can easily be seen as mocking the newly crowned transgender advocate.

The backlash has already started, with a petition calling for the costumes to be taken off the shelves.

“To make a costume out of a marginalized identity reduces that person and community to a stereotype for privileged people to abuse,” wrote activist Addison Rose Vincent, who started the petition. “In this case, if you follow through with production of a Caitlyn Jenner costume, cisgender people will purchase it to make fun of her and our community.”

We understand that being politically correct is not an important part of Halloween for many, but with the statistics surrounding transgender people showing increased risks for suicide, and discrimination at work, for housing and for health care, a costume is not going to help combat the negative stigma affecting the community.

Even if you are sincerely dressing up like Jenner to celebrate her bravery, there will definitely be others mocking the reality star, and that is not a crowd anyone wants to be a part of.

Just like paying homage to Winnie Harlow with vitiligo makeup is a bad idea, so is dressing up like Jenner.

So ditch the Vanity Fair Caitlyn Jenner costume, and even half Bruce, half Caitlyn idea (we know you were thinking it), and think outside the box a little bit this Halloween.
