Why Aren’t There More Stylish POC Weddings In ‘Vogue’?

With summer slowly fading into the fall, it seems that cuffing season is upon us. The event better known as the result of cold weather and “Netflix and Chill” sessions has people considering to settle down. For those that do, it is interesting to note that getting married is a serious step for anyone looking to take the cuffing to another level.

Vogue, one of the premiere destinations for all things fashionable and chic, has recently made the decision to increase its wedding coverage. Documenting these momentous occasions are important because as we are all increasingly noticing — people watching and seeing how unions happen help create a strong bond between others. What separates an average wedding from one worthy of Vogue‘s attention is a matter of opinion and what we’ve see doesn’t bode well for couples of color.

Sure, if you look at the website’s wedding page, you’ll notice familiar faces such as Solange Knowles and her husband, Alan Ferguson; Kanye West and his selfie-superstar wife, Kim Kardashian-West; and even NBA champion Tyson Chandler was chronicled with his wife, Kimberly for their vow renewal. Yet, these are exceptions to the norm that is Vogue‘s wedding section. Munaluchi Bride might cover those whose melanin is mighty, yet there isn’t a person worth their weight in gold who wouldn’t want to be featured in Vogue‘s fashion bible status.

As noted by Fashionista, Factors such as celebrities in attendance or Anna Wintour being the mother of the groom should limit the exposure of couples of color who put as much pomp and circumstance into their union as others. Of the 153 posts about weddings featured on Vogue.com, only five featured are with persons of color. This constitutes about 3 percent of the entirety of content relating to couples of color and their decision to get married. While you can add that they don’t offer any attention to same-sex weddings as well (only two were featured), it is embarrassing to know that the venerable publication won’t be checking for, say, Ciara and Russell Wilson when/if they get married.

Focusing on fashion, jewelry, models, or its own staff, Vogue profiles the creme de la creme within multiple industries. Yet, does #BlackLoveMatter in the eyes of Vogue? We will have to see as the publication continues to hone its wedding section, but the smart money is that it will be politics as usual with those at Vogue.
