Jillaine- "I wished for different hair all of the time"

My name is Jillaine. I’m 18 years old, American, of Irish and Jamaican descent. I was born in the Bronx, New York and lived there until I was 10 years old. I then moved to Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, where I’ve lived since moving.

How long have you been natural?
My hair has been natural my entire life! Of course from time to time I would straighten it, especially during my middle school years, but I’ve always rocked my natural hair. I really started embracing my curls my sophomore year of high school, back in 2010/11.

What motivated you to embrace your curls?
I’ve always been natural and let my natural hair go. I didn’t really start getting serious about it until sophomore year, and the end of my senior year I ended up chopping a lot of my hair off to sort of start fresh.

How would you describe your hair?
I would say that my curl texture is predominantly 3c. The curls are very fine. My hair has a mind of its own though, which I’m okay with most of the time. My hair loves humidity, which most curly girls don’t particularly love because the hair can get too frizzy, but the more frizz the better, in my opinion.

What do you love most about your hair?
I think I love how I can do so much with my hair, although I don’t take advantage of that opportunity most of the time.

How has your hair journey been?
I wouldn’t say that the journey has been difficult, but it hasn’t been easy either. Trying to figure out what works for your curls can be a pain, because you’re spending so much on products and have no guarantee that they’ll work. Just seeing the different in my curl pattern over time, seeing how much healthier it is now, that’s awesome.

What is your favorite hairstyle?
Honestly, I usually just wear my hair down or up in a bun/ponytail. I have yet to really experiment with other hairstyles!

Any reactions from others regarding your hair?
Well considering I’ve had the curls my entire life, my family is quite used to them. When I go out in public though, that’s a completely different story. No matter where I am or who I’m with, I get stopped everywhere I go by people either complimenting my hair or asking for tips! It’s awesome!

What is your hair regimen?
My hair regime is really simple actually; I’m a wash and go type of gal. I wash my hair every 2-4 days. After washing it, I separate my hair into two sections and then apply Kinky Curly Knot Today Leave In Conditioner/Detangler and One ‘N Only Aragan Oil. I have yet to really experiment with different hairstyles because for one, I’m lazy, and I’m also really happy with the way my hair falls most of the time after washing so I find no need to play around with it; my hair is either down in its natural state or up in a bun/ponytail. I try to deep condition every two weeks, and when I do I use the Shea Moisture Raw Shea Butter Deep Treatment Masque, although I’m looking for new stuff to try out.

Describe wash day.
My wash day’s are pretty simple. I hop in the shower, soak my hair in the water and then lather my head with shampoo. The shampoo I use is DevaCurl No-Poo Shampoo, which I love. I let that sit for a few minutes, and then I was it out. I then separate my hair into two sections, and take two pumps of my DevaCurl One Condition Conditioner and start working on one side of my head. I use the Revlon Signature Paddle Brush to brush out each section of my head, starting from the bottom working my way up. Once I finish conditioning and brushing my hair out, I let the conditioner sit for a few minutes and then wash it out.

Who is your favorite vlogger?
I love ShamelessMaya on Youtube! Although she cut off her locks a while back, I’m always looking
at her curly hair videos.

Any advice?
Just love your natural hair! I cannot explain how many times throughout my life I’ve sat and thought to myself “I hate my hair.” I wished for different hair all of the time, nobody should feel that way. It took me 15 years to realize that my hair was awesome, I don’t want it to take that long for others!

Where are you on social media?
I have an Instagram, Tumblr, Twitter and Youtube account! I don’t use my Youtube as much as the other accounts though.
