Your first thought when reading this headline was probably something stereotypical like Jesus chains and a shirt that reads “Trap Queen.” But we take our love of trap music way more seriously.

Originating in Atlanta during the ’90s, the music genre got its beginnings from hip hop groups like Outkast and Goodie Mob who waxed poetic about the dangers of drug creation and trafficking. It was about being in the Trap, a designated area of cocaine production and being “trapped” (a double entendre) in the game.

The sound has developed from basic Roland 808 beats to a marriage of hihats, synth keys, brass, piano notes and so much more. Most recently, trap artist Future release a mixtape with Toronto-based talent Drake, to make an entire album dedicated to the sound.

For those of you who enjoy the sounds of the aforementioned artists, and others making the music, you most likely gravitate to functions where trap music is played.

But what to wear?

The look is about being inconspicuously cool as possible. Think neutral colors, dark shades, bolero hats, bling and touches of edge– ie. leather jacket or ripped t-shirt.

On the next pages are some key items to look the part while still being incredibly stylish.
