Everything old is new again. Case in point: ’90s style is having a moment right now. And that’s great news for curvy girls, because there are a lot of gorgeous (and flattering!) fast-fashion dresses that work for the trend.

Enter this dress from Forever 21 (similar style here). Not only does it have a cool geometric print, it’s made out of velvet, the ultimate ’90s fabric. You’re probably thinking, “Velvet? It’s almost summer!” But hear me out. It’s a really lightweight stretch velvet, so it’s the perfect transitional piece — breathable enough during the day, yet thick enough to wear with a jacket on chillier nights. I also love that the long sleeves give more coverage. I know, for me, my arms are the one part of my body I don’t like to show off much, so whenever I find a long-sleeved mini dress I feel like I’m winning!

One thing to be aware of when you shop for fast-fashion dresses (as opposed to traditional plus-size brands): The sizing is different because junior plus-sizes tend to run a little bit smaller. You might have to go up a size. And since the looks are on the more affordable end, you have to take good care of them if you’re hoping to wear them a lot. That said, I think Forever 21 is really doing plus-size right. It offers just as many trendy options as it does with its straight sizes.

Okay, now on to the accessories. I paired my dress with strappy-heeled sandals from Charlotte Russe (similar style here). I love a little detail, like a strap, whenever I’m not wearing a big pump because it plays up my legs. Then I added a statement choker from Fashion to Figure (similar style here) for obvious ’90s reasons. I like this one because it’s not too costumey and jazzes up the whole outfit.

Finally, I finished the look with a dark lip to go for that moody, Julia Stiles/10 Things I Hate About You kind of vibe. And coincidentally, the lip color I chose happens to match my manicure and pedicure — it’s not something I did on purpose; I guess I just really love that color!
