Donatella Versace Talks Met Gala, Working With J.Lo

With mere hours to go before the 2015 Met Gala, we are hoping that there won’t be a rematch of what happened last year between Solange Knowles and Jay Z. As the paparazzi gear up to shoot the best and worst in fashion for one of New York’s premiere events, Donatella Versace is still working on the finishing touches for Jennifer Lopez’s dress. “I brought three people from Italy to finish the dress,” Versace said during the Met Museum’s conversation with Alina Cho as reported by ELLE.

Lopez, who will also be Donatella’s date for the evening, also collaborated on the look for the 2015 Met Gala. “She got so excited [about the China theme], so we worked together on this dress,” Donatella told the former CNN correspondent. “She’ll be great from the front, even better from the back.” Formally called the “Costume Institute Gala” or the “Met Ball,” this annual fundraising gala benefits the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute in New York City.

Each year, celebrities of all walks of life come to open their hearts (and wallets) to give to the Costume Institute exhibition. The theme, which sets the tone for the formal dress of the night, will find everyone doing their best to outshine the other as they walk along the red carpet. Cho, who conducted the hour-long discussion with the legendary designer, talked about her work with Givenchy for a new advert, her famous friends Lady Gaga and Madonna, and debunks the truth behind one of her notorious travel habits.

On being the new face of Givenchy: “[Riccardo Tisci] is an old friend. [When he asked me about the ad, he said,] ‘I’m afraid to ask you. I know you will say no. But will you be the face of Givenchy? You’ve been my inspiration for many years.’ I said yes. Fashion is family. You create your own family in fashion.”

On her friendship with Madonna: “We see each other almost every day. She’s an icon. She’s always going to be there [because] she’s willing to change.”

On her life in Milan: “I have no social life at all. I never go out because I divide my life [and I associate Milan with work]. I love jogging suits [for lounge wear]. No, I don’t wear flats.”

On designing couture: “Doing haute couture is a dream. It’s like a fairy tale. You have a bigger budget and you experiment. Couture is precious.”

On advice for new designers: “You have to be ready to suffer. You have to push yourself, work hard, and send whatever you want to people like me because I’m going to read it. I read all of it.”
