Here’s What Happened When I Got My Nipple Pierced

Everyone’s adolescence is marked with a few special “firsts.” First birthday party, first job and of course; the first ear piercing. As twenty somethings, we still cherish those moments, but embracing our “millennial” badge means taking risks, having fun and enduring a little pain along the way. For many, that includes the always alluring nipple piercing, sported by celebs like Rihanna and Kylie Jenner.

When I took the plunge and got mine, it was one of the most random and surprisingly chill experiences I’ve ever had. I literally woke up one day and thought, “Hmm, I think I’ll do that today.” As with any piercing, having a needle go through your skin is a strange mix of pleasure and pain, but the best part is that it’s conveniently placed under your clothes.

“Nipple piercings are actually the one piercing that hasn’t gone on hiatus in popularity,” says Cassi Lopez, piercer at NY Adorned in New York City.

“There are so many people out there that want piercings, but can’t have visible ones. I think that’s why nipple and septum piercings are so attractive; it’s like having your own little secret. On the piercing spectrum, all types of unique ear piercings are most requested. Eyebrow piercings are probably the least popular, despite how trendy that ’90s look is right now.”

Unlike a tattoo, the less permanent nipple ring doesn’t require too much thinking beforehand; unless you’re preparing to have kids and breastfeed, we say you either do or don’t do it.

“Are you ready for the commitment?,” adds Lopez. “Nipples can take a bit longer in the healing department, due to everyday stress on the body. As long as you’re ready to deal with the irritation and ‘crust’ that comes along with the prolonged healing time, then I say go for it!”

Speaking of crust, there’s a lot of it. Firstly, the path to a sexy boob bar is paved with immediate pain; after all, there’s a needle going one of the most sensitive parts of the body! Prepare to feel a sharp sting from the nipple to your toes that quickly subsides. Once the worst part is over, you’ll see crusting and scabbing that can last for weeks or months depending on the person.

Lopez suggests getting acquainted with a sea salt solution, which you can either buy at the shop or make at home.

“I usually tell people to spend the first few nights in a clean sports bra. The rubbing of clothing against a freshly pierced, already sensitive area can be super uncomfortable,” she says.  “As far as aftercare goes, I am a sea salt gal. You cant go wrong with a warm, salt water soak. Not only will it disinfect, but the heat really helps soothe the area.”
