Julianne Hough’s DWTS Photo Diary: All About Week 7’s ‘Grace Kelly-Inspired’ Look

In this week’s installment of her exclusive behind-the-scenes photo diary for PEOPLE, DWTS judge Julianne Hough takes her style and beauty inspiration from the 1920s. And her Old Hollywood vibe is perfect for week seven’s “Eras Night.” Read on for all the scoop from Hough, plus her glam squad, stylist Anita Patrickson, hairstylist Riawna Capri and makeup artist Spencer Barnes.

Patrickson tells PEOPLE that Hough’s latest ensemble was just as much about the jewels as it was about the gown.

“It was inspired by the ’20s,” she says. “The vintage Neil Lane diamonds and this completely gorgeous Temperley London dress on Julianne are a match made in heaven. I love Julianne in white, and she also gravitates towards it. This silhouette is stunning, and Alice Temperley is an amazing designer.”

Hough’s stylist adds that the biggest challenge was keeping the host’s look fashion forward and “not too theatrical.”

“Keeping your hair or makeup modern will help achieve a fresh take on a modern classic,” she advises.

Her makeup artist explains that her beauty moment was “very Grace Kelly–inspired.”

“The makeup I created was intended to be a throwback to the 1920s with a modern twist,” Barnes says. “The dress is more ‘Golden Age Marilyn’ on top, and the hair is a contemporary adaptation of a Katy Perry hair reference. The idea was to hint at the best of the Golden Ages and combine in a timeless, modern way. The dress arrived at the last minute, so there were adjustments all along the way. I wanted Julianne to look like a classic female film archetype brought to life.”

Barnes says that the right lip color was the hardest aspect to nail down.

“We started with flirty pink lips, then to baby-doll lips and finally settled on a creamy ’90s brownish-flesh tone,” he explains. “The eyes were kept matte with deep brown powdered shadows and I focused on a more rounded — versus an elongated — shape. Minimal contour and bronzing was used to add to the cherub-like quality of the face, focusing on curves and roundness instead of sharp, angular structure.”

As for her hair, Hough is back to blonde (for now), and her mane master (Capri) styled her tresses into the perfect retro waves.

“One of my favorite parts of the day was watching Julianne and Riawna work together to channel this particular retro-modern look,” Barnes shares. “Sometimes I swear Julianne actually lived a past life as an early Hollywood film star or vaudeville performer. It’s just in her spirit!”
