Look of the Week: Shay Mitchell’s Grunge-Inspired Navy Eyeliner

We’re constantly updating our Last Night’s Look gallery with all the best red-carpet moments (gorgeous dresses! dazzling accessories! sky-high heels!). Now, let’s talk beauty. Each week, we’ll be highlighting one of the most gorgeous makeup and/or hair moments, along with details on how to recreate the look — straight from the makeup artist or hairstylist — in our feature, Look of the Week.

As soon as she wrapped season six of Pretty Little Liars, Shay Mitchell jetset off to N.Y.C. for a week of promo for her other major project — her new book, Bliss. And it was in the Big Apple that the star sported one of her boldest, and in our opinion, best beauty moments to date: a smudged navy liner look. So we reached out to celebrity makeup artist Patrick Ta, who’s been working with Mitchell for two years (fun fact, she discovered him on Instagram!), to get the details on the grunge-inspired look.

“We have never done this color on her before, so we were feeling adventurous and wanted to try something new and fun since we were in New York,” Ta told People regarding the unexpected bold beauty moment. “I decided to go with blue eyeliner because I was tired of doing the same look on Shay all the time and wanted to switch up her look.”

So how’d Ta perfect the smudged-up liner? The makeup pro first began by applying a soft matte brown eye shadow (by Anastasia Beverly Hills) to Mitchell’s lids to create a clean, smooth canvas. He then added a dark matte brown shadow to the outer crease and the bottom lash line to create definition and a bit of drama.

Now for the blue! Ta applied a silky, deep navy-hued eye shadow (from Honest Beauty) to the lid and lightly blended to diffuse the color out. He then lined the star’s water line with Honest Beauty’s True Velvet Eyeliner in Truly Sapphire and smudged it up to keep the liner from looking too clean.

Ta curled Mitchell’s lashes with a waterproof mascara for “long wearing” (we recommend CoverGirl’s the Super sizer by Lashblast Waterproof) and added a few individual Esqido lashes to create “twinkly,” fluttery lashes.

The makeup pro finished off the look with a nude lipstick (Tom Ford Lip Color in Smoke Sable) to complement the navy liner and keep it the focal point of the beauty moment.

And while Ta said Mitchell was a fan of the color switch-up, he says we shouldn’t expect to to see the star sport the look again any time soon.

“[Shay] loved the blue, but she loves her neutral color tones.”
