Choosing a fragrance is much like choosing a great pair of shoes; it has to fit your personality, lifestyle and budget. In short, how you smell should embody your overall essence. Oftentimes, when we’re presented with an overwhelming amount of options, we close our eyes, reach for anything and hope for the best. When it comes to perfume, all of the foreign terms certainly don’t help. Understanding what they actually mean is the common sense hack that will bring you one step closer to a signature smell.

First, know how to pick a scent a part. The top notes are the first thing you smell when applying a scent. Next are the middle notes, which make up most of the smell and sit on your skin the longest. Keep in mind, it can also take some time for these to settle. Lastly, the base notes are the heavier ingredients that you probably notice about a minute after testing. This three tier build is precisely why should always take your time when trying out a scent at the store.
The “sillage” or after smell is typically attached to the base notes or something completely different. This depends on the overall build of the formulation.

Chances are you’ve owned at least one “eau de” product in your life, but have you ever paid attention to the breakdown? Separated by compound percentages, “eau de cologne” carries the smallest ratio of perfume to other ingredients (essential oils, alcohol) while “eau de parfum” is the heaviest and “eau de toilette” plays middle man.
You’ll also notice that the prices usually fluctuate the same way, with parfums being the most expensive.
