#NYFW Runway Recap: BCBG Max Azria Brings The Bucket Back

#NYFW kicked off with an exquisitely colorful, nostalgically throwback, and slightly Clueless-style BCBG Max Azria runway show. Amidst the dreary, cloud shrouded setting that New York City provided for the first day of Fashion Week, BCBG presented a warm, sun-kissed California-inspired collection. The sunset hues, bucket hats, and easy blouses had everyone watching the show eager to hold on to the last few days of summer, and grab on to the too-cool-for-school collection.

As the first looks exited the backstage, it was clear that the 90s-era inspiration, dominating fashion both on the runway and the streets for the past few seasons, is still going strong. The BCBG designers choose a different locale to inspire their new offerings every season. The choice for #SS16 was Los Angeles. Their take on LA southern California style manifested in a fusion of the 90s skater aesthetic with ethnic details like Mexican embroidery and shibori tie-dye. We got the sense that the “Clueless” character Travis Birkenstock and his skateboarding, baggy-pants inclined, carefree cohorts might have been a major style touchstone for Max Azria- even if subliminally.

But the truly successful ingredient of the BCBG Max Azria showcase this season was in the synthesis of the 90s revival we’ve become all too familiar with, blended with other unexpected components. Decisively, the superb styling of the runway looks pulled the entire show’s aesthetic together. Tie-dye long-sleeve shirts would add a touch of roughness to a sundress or a layer of complexity when peeking out under a kimono-style top. Show-stopping pieces included patchwork wide-leg trousers and structured culottes reminiscent of beach board shorts. Several gleaming gold metallic garments stood out when mixed with more muted counterparts. Structural, almost architectural outerwear garments contrasted with cushy knitwear and breathable beach dresses.

The parade of casual styles in washed out baby blue, coral, yellow, turquoise, and khaki was completed with an incredible finale– a lustrous white evening set complete with loose kimono sleeves and a long skirt. The ensemble featured another surprising pop of a tie-dye undershirt, which lent itself to dressing down the look for an easy Californian-style answer to evening wear.
