Paris haute couture: highlights from Valentino

The Italian brand showed its Fall/Winter 2014 haute couture collection on a stunning woodland set in Paris.

Kim Kardashian showed up with Valentino Garavani at Wednesday’s show, but despite all the noise an arrival like that was bound to create, creative directors Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pierpaolo Piccioli let the clothes do the talking, as usual.

Models emerged (with simple center-parted hair) in Grecian flat sandals with straps wound around legs, matched with leather straps tied around torsos. The Classical floral motifs continued in a series of pieces in black-and-white and sheer shapes. Next up were long minimalist togas in solid colors, feathered coats and dresses, and some of the duo’s stunning lace embroidery.

A sartorial element snuck in with the wide-lapelled tailored blazers, while tapestry coats and skirts were worn with backless knit jumpers for a more relaxed feel. The studded medieval flowers, and wispy light colored organzas (shaped into stunning transparent gowns) only added to the delightful mix of modern shapes, haute couture craftwork, and a seemingly never-ending list of inspirations.
