The experts will tell you a million and one ways to maintain clear skin, but there is one common thread; healthy habits breed a healthy outward appearance.

Oftentimes, our biggest beauty dilemmas are an internal matter and not just what we put on top of our face. Besides a diet rich in greens and fruits, there should also be some “bitter” thrown in the mix.

We know the word is packed with negative connotation, but it turns out bitter foods–parsley, cilantro, turmeric–are what prevent bloating, indigestion and of course–acne. Pre-modern times, this was a piece of cake (see what we did there?), but nowadays, store shelves are stocked with sugary and salty foods that slow down our body’s natural processes.

Bitters are what wake up the system and help it move faster (I.e. faster metabolism).

Per Urban Moonshine, a go to brand for digestive tonics and bitters:

Bitter challenges the body, alerting it through taste that a complex food is being ingested, more complex than heavily processed food. Bitters are like the gym for the digestive system, they help to keep it toned. Our tongue is like the doorbell to the digestive system that lets us know it is time to eat, time to wake up, time to digest. All the digestive organs get turned on–excited. They start to secrete digestive juices in prep for the incoming food and as a result, promote healthy, radiant skin.

SBs, this is one small step that will make a big difference. When your digestive system is on track, everything else–including skin–will follow suit. Keep reading to see five of our favorite digestive bitters on the market.
