The Search For Alexander Wang’s Successor Is Now Over

It was just last week when we were discussing possible successors for Balenciaga’s creative director, Alexander Wang. And now, it’s safe to say the search is over. According to WWD, Demna Gvasalia, the leader behind the Parisian brand, Vetements will take over as artistic director – with his first collection set to debut in March.

And while Gvasalia will continue to work with Vetements as well, it seems like Balenciaga’s mission to find an underground fashion voice was successful. “I was really amazed by his ability to develop an approach to the brand that was really new and that was really his own…what should be the attitude, what should be the silhouette, what should be the volumes,” said chief executive officer and president, Isabele Guichot.

According to Business of Fashion, the designer is best known for his oversized silhouettes, patchwork details and floral dresses. And although he wasn’t one of the three designers rumored by the New York Times, the European-born creative has quite the resume – one that includes names like Louis Vuitton and Maison Margiela.

The good news is that Gvasalia is entering Balenciaga with quite a few fans from his Vetements brand – Rihanna, Kanye and Kim K, just to name a few. And if you ask us, this just confirms that the French fashion house will still be in good hands.
