The #SS16 Models Of Color Bringing Diversity To The Runway

Diversity in modeling has been a longstanding issue in the industry. The Spring 2016 collections however have shown increased diversification. Models from the States, the Caribbean, South America and India, with a range of skin tones and ethnic backgrounds, are finding a place on the runway. The battle for inclusion may not be over, but the industry is certainly making room for more models of color.

Newcomers like Dominican Lineisy Montero has walked 35 plus shows and still counting! Karly Loyce from Martinique broke out as the face of Céline’s Fall 2015 campaign earlier this year while California girl Shelby Hayes debuted at  Proenza Schouler followed by Marc Jacobs within weeks of being discovered.

With all these fresh faces one might expect them to be bumping other models as was the case in the past. Many models of color have gone on record that spots were limited to maybe one or two girls per show, so getting cast could mean bumping another model for the spot.  These models aren’t replacing the likes of Jourdan Dunn, Chanel Iman or Joan Smalls but walking along side them.

Here’s our favorite breakout models of color to watch.  Prepare to be obsessed!
