Komen foundation, about 231,840 new cases of breast cancer are expected to arise this year. And with growing numbers like these, experts like Beverly Hills based dermatologist Tsippora Shainhouse stress the importance of monthly self-breast exams.

“Monthly self-breast exams are helpful to get to know your breasts and learn what your normal feels like, explains Tsippora Shainhouse, MD, FRCPC, FAAD.Try examining your breasts in the shower the week after your period, when breasts are less tender. Soapy hands make it easy to feel for lumps, so be sure to feel under the nipple area and as far out as your armpit, since the breast tissue can grow that far out.”

While breast lumps are often the biggest warning signs of breast cancer, Shainhouse recommends looking for other noticeable indicators such as skin changes, nipple changes and new asymmetry of the breasts.

Other indicators to look for are, peau d’orange, a French term for skin puckering that looks like the peel of an orange.”

Also, checking the symmetry of your breasts proves to be equally important, as any new asymmetrical changes to the breasts (rapid increase in size of one breast, or new positioning of the nipples) are signs worth taking note of, says Shainhouse.

“The best way for you to check for this at home is to stand in front of a bathroom mirror with your hands on your hips,” she says. “Look at your breasts and examine for any asymmetric skin or contour or nipple changes. Then, lean forward and let your breasts hang, and look again for changes in skin, contour or nipple appearance and orientation.”
