Want to Dress Like Emmy Rossum? Follow This One Rule

There’s a reason Emmy Rossum is a mainstay in our Love Her Outfit gallery, and why her CFDA Awards look was one of the most loved on Monday night: The girl’s got style. She shared her top “how to” with PEOPLE at the new American Express Centurion Lounge in Miami Airport, looking glam in a chiffon blue two-toned jumpsuit — as well as the secret to keeping her crazy closet under control.

So the first style rule the star follows is that (wait for it) there are no style rules. “Wear what makes you happy and what you feel comfortable in … you just gotta be you.”

And if the “you” you gotta be is very close in style to Rossum, you can start would by hitting the L.A. thrift scene. “I’m a big clearer-outer and I give a ton to Goodwill,” she tells PEOPLE. “Because when the amount of stuff comes to me … you wear them and then you give them to places where they would be better off than just sitting in my closet.”

Rossum, 28, attended the CFDA awards the previous night with shoe designer and friend, nominee Paul Andrew. Andrew created a custom shoe” for Emmy for the evening, which she paired with a cutout Dion Lee dress. And while she did not witness the Kim Kardashian dress fire, the Shameless star did have a hot night of her own. “It’s always exciting to be with people when they are nominated and he came up with the CFDA Vogue Fashion Fund, so to make it to the CFDAs is always exciting.”

The Centurion Lounge features all kinds of high-end goodies, including food from celebrity chef Michelle Bernstein — a topic close to Rossum’s heart. As a sufferer of Celiac’s disease, the actress is gluten free, but she says she doesn’t miss a thing from her old diet. “I find that there is an alternative for almost anything,” she says. “My favorite thing in the world are macaroons and they just happen to be gluten free because they are made from almond flour.”

She will let herself indulge in other ways, too. “We were in the AmEx lounge flying here today from LAX and they had the best frittata with some kind of white soft cheese, it was incredible. There are ways to indulge without wheat.”
